Counters

Counters are special Japanese words which are put after a number when you count different things.

On this page, remember the three counters below to talk about age, year level and month in Japanese.

  • number + sa i (さい) → age
  • number + ne n se i (ねんせい) → year level
  • number + ga tsu (がつ) → month

Example

Age

ni sa i (ニさい) → two years old

go sa i (五さい) → five years old

Year level

i chi ne n se i (一ねんせい) → Year 1

sa n ne n se i (三ねんせい) → Year 3

Month

ha chi ga tsu (八がつ) → August (8th month)

ju u ni ga tsu (十二がつ) → December (12th month)
