Ichidan Verb is one of the three Japanese verb groups.
Name
Ichidan Verb is also known as Group 1 or Weak Verb.
i (or e) sound + る
Ichidan verbs finish with i sound + る or e sound + る in Dictionary Form.
Example
- しんじる (ji ru) : believe
- みる (mi ru) : look, watch, see
- おきる (ki ru) : wake up
- おりる (ri ru) : get off
- たべる (be ru) : eat
- あける (ke ru) : open
- しめる (me ru) : close
Exception
The verbs below are not Ichidan Verb even though it ends with i sound + る or e sound + る in Dictionary Form.
- はしる (shi ru) : run → Godan Verb

Why are they called Ichidan Verb?
たべる is Ichidan Verb. Let’s see some endings of the verb conjugation.
- たべます:eat
- たべたいです:want to eat
- たべなければなりません:have to eat
- たべたことがあります:have eaten
- たべながら:while eating
- たべたら :if (you) eat
You can see only one letter which is べ in front of all the endings in bold.
