と:Sentence Pattern

- if you eat:食べると (verb plain present positive form + と)
- if you don’t eat:食べないと (verb plain present negative form + と)
- if it is yummy:おいしいと (い adjective plain present positive form + と)
- if it is not yummy:おいしくないと (い adjective plain present negative form + と)
- if it is quiet:しずかだと (な adjective plain present positive form + と)
- if it is not quiet:しずかじゃないと (な adjective plain present negative form + と)
ば:Sentence Pattern

Sentence B ば Sentence A
- if you eat:食べれば (change u sound to e sound at the end of dictionary form + ば)
- if you don’t eat:食べなければ (remove い at the end of verb plain present negative form + ければ)
- if it is yummy:おいしければ (remove い at the end of い adjective plain present positive form + ければ)
- if it is not yummy:おいしくなければ (remove い at the end of い adjective plain present negative form + ければ)
- if it is quiet:しずかならば (な adjective dictionary form + らば)
- if it is not quiet:しずかじゃなければ (remove い at the end of な adjective plain present negative form + ければ)
ら:Sentence Pattern

Sentence B ら Sentence A
- if you eat:食べるなら、食べたら
- if you don’t eat:食べないなら、食べなかったら
- if it is yummy:おいしいなら、おいしかったら
- if it is not yummy:おいしくないなら、おいしくなかったら
- if it is quiet:しずかなら、しずかだったら
- if it is not quiet:しずかじゃないなら、しずかじゃなかったら
Difference amongst と, ば and ら
と, ば and ら are all slightly different.
‘when’ rather than ‘if’
When you translate と, ば and ら, ‘when’ is sometimes more suitable than ‘if’.
Exercise
Task: Change into Japanese.
- You can eat yummy food if you go to a restaurant.
- レストランに行くと、おいしい食べ物を食べることができます。or
- レストランに行けば、おいしい食べ物を食べることができます。or
- レストランに行ったら、おいしい食べ物を食べることができます。
Kanji:行(い)く、食(た)べ物(もの)、食(た)べる
Task: Change into English.
