Indirect Question
Indirect questions are used many times when you read and write. Examples of Indirect Question are as follows:
Indirect Question: Type 1
- I don’t know when my father died.
- I want to know how much the car is.
- I don’t know where my mother is.
Indirect Question: Type 2
- I don’t know if my father died.
- Let me know if you can come.
- I am not sure if the answer is correct.
Indirect Question Type 1
English: Sentence A + Question word + Sentence B
↓
Japanese: Question word + Sentence B + のか + Sentence A
Example
I don’t know when my father died.
- Sentence A: I don’t know
- Sentence B: my father died
↓
いつ父がしんだのか私は知りません。

- I don’t know what time my father comes.
- I don’t know why my older brother does not work.
- Please tell me when the exam starts.
- I know how my mother made sushi.
- I want to know how much a smart phone is.
- My father is finding out with a smart phone what kind of town London is.
Indirect Question Type 2
English: Sentence A + if + Sentence B
↓
Japanese: Sentence B + かどうか + Sentence A
Example
I don’t know if my father died.
- Sentence A: I don’t know
- Sentence B: my father died
↓
父がしんだかどうか私は知りません。
