Japanese dodgeball
Dodgeball is played around the world but people in Asia play the sports with different rules.
Rule
Court
There are the infield area and the outfield area in the court.
Dodgeball played out of Asia does not have the outfield area.
Number of players
A team usually consists of 12 players.
It can be up to 20 players.
Both teams should have the same number of players.
Number of balls
One ball is usually used, but you might like to use two balls.
Three balls are not usual.
How to start
The game starts with a tip-off.
A player from both teams stand in the middle of the court.
The two players jump and try to knock the ball down into their team
when it is tossed up in the air.
They are not allowed to get hit right after the tip-off.
How to win
A team wins if they remove all infield players in the other team.
Infielder
Infielders play in the infield only.
If they get hit by the ball,
they have to go to the outfield area on the other side of the court
without disturbing players in the infield area.
Outfielder
Outfielders play in the outfield only.
There should be at least one outfielder when a game starts.
Outfielders and infielders should work together
to hit players in the other team with the ball.
Passing the ball quickly between outfielders and infielders
is one of the effective ways.
Outfielders can go back into the infield area
if they hit an infield player in the other team with the ball properly.
How to remove an infielder
- An infield player will be removed if they get hit by the ball without the bound.
- An infield player will not be removed if they catch the ball after getting hit.
- The first infield player will be removed if the ball hits two players at once.
Foul
General
The ball will be given to the other team if you:
- step inside the other team’s area.
- touch players in the other team during a game.
- get the ball in the infield area of the other team.
Pass
The ball will be given to the other team if you:
- pass the ball between infielders or outfielders. (You must pass it between an infielder and an outfielder.)
- pass the ball more than 5 times.
Throw
The ball will be given to the other team if you:
- throw the ball over the centre line or one of the borders of the court.
- throw the ball after 5 seconds you catch it.
- hit a player in the face or head with the ball.
Catch
The ball will be given to the other team if you:
- catch the ball over the line.
