Baseball had been the most popular to watch as well as play until early 1990s when J League started. J League is a Japanese professional soccer league. It is no doubt that baseball and soccer are the two major sports in Japan these days.
Many Japanese people like to watch Sumo although it is a type of martial art technically speaking, as Judo, Kendo and Karate. The number of Japanese people who like to become a sumo wrestler has decreased, which some people think is a problem.
Other sports they enjoy watching or playing are: golf, tennis, figure skating, gymnastics, swimming, basketball, volleyball, table tennis, badminton etc.
They have become more popular than before as Japanese players are strong enough to win a big title around the world, competing great players from other countries.
