o’clock
Number + o’clock → Number + 時(じ/ji)
Example
- one o’clock → 一時(いちじ/i chi ji)
- five o’clock → 五時(ごじ/go ji)
- twelve o’clock → 十二時(じゅうにじ/ju u ni ji)

Be careful of 4 and 9 when you tell the time in Japanese. See below.

せんせい
Four is ‘shi’ and nine is ‘kyu u’ when you count in Japanese.
But they are not used when you tell the time.
half past
half past + Number → Number + 時半(じはん/ji ha n)
Example
- half past three → 三時半(さんじはん/sa n ji ha n)
- half past eight → 八時半(はちじはん/ha chi ji ha n)
- half past ten → 十時半(じゅうじはん/ju u ji ha n)

minute
Number + minute → Number + 分(ふん/’fu n’ or ‘pu n’)

できる子
‘fu n’ is for 5, 15, 25, 35, 45 and 55.
‘pu n’ is for 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50.

- fifteen minutes → 十五分(じゅうごふん/ju u go fu n)
- fifty minutes → 五十分(ごじゅっぷん/go ju p pu n)
- three minutes → 三分(さんぷん/sa n pu n)
