Rules for counting numbers

Once you learn how to count 1 to 10 and 11 to 20, you can count other numbers by the rules below.

Numbers with zero at the end

You need multiplication.

30

three × ten → 三十

40

four × ten → 四十

Other numbers

You need multiplication and addition.

21

twenty (2 × 10) + one → 二十一

25

twenty (2 × 10) + five → 二十五

98

ninty (9 × 10) + eight → 九十八

You don’t have to translate ‘×’ or ‘+’ when you say numbers.

Over 100

Other key numbers

  • 100 百(ひゃく)
  • 1000 千(せん)
  • 10000 万(まん)
  • 100000000 億(おく)

Numbers with zeros

You need multiplication.

500

5 × 100 → 五百

8000

8 × 1000 → 八千

30000

3 × 10000 → 三万

Other numbers

You need multiplication and addition.

730

1985

Note

39824 is 三万九千八百二十四 in Japanese, although you hardly see numbers written in Japanese at shops in Japan. They just use ‘39824’ for 39824 for example. See the photo below.

So you wouldn’t be required to write them in Japanese, but you definitely should be able to read and recognise them accurately in Japanese.
