First box: English, Second box: Romaji, Last box: Japanese writing and audio
What did you do yesterday? |
ki no u na ni wo shi ma shi ta ka |
きのう何をしましたか。 |
One by one
- きのう → yesterday
- 何(なに) → what
- を → no meaning
- しました → did
- か → ?
Note 1: No ‘you’
あなた is ‘you’ in Japanese. There is no word for ‘you’ in the Japanese sentence above. This often happens.
Japanese people do not usually put あなた if it is clear enough to ask ‘you’ in the situation.
Note 2: Actual name instead of ‘you’
the person’s name plus は can be put at the start if you want to say ‘you’.
For example, if you talk with Ken(ケン)and ask what he did yesterday, you can say either of the sentences below:
- きのう何をしましたか。
- ケンはきのう何をしましたか。
