Ichidan Verb is one of the three Japanese verb groups.

Ichidan Verb is also known as Group 1 or Weak Verb.

i (or e) sound + る

Ichidan verbs finish with i sound + る or e sound + る in Dictionary Form.

Example
  • しんじる (ji ru) : believe
  • みる (mi ru) : look, watch, see
  • きる (ki ru) : wake up
  • りる (ri ru) : get off
  • べる (be ru) : eat
  • ける (ke ru) : open
  • める (me ru) : close

Exception

The verbs below are not Ichidan Verb even though it ends with i sound + る or e sound + る in Dictionary Form.

  • しる (shi ru) : run → Godan Verb

What Ichidan means

Why are they called Ichidan Verb?

たべる is Ichidan Verb. Let’s see some endings of the verb conjugation.

  • ます:eat
  • たいです:want to eat
  • なければなりません:have to eat
  • たことがあります:have eaten
  • ながら:while eating
  • たら :if (you) eat

You can see only one letter which is べ in front of all the endings in bold.

Ichi is one in Japanese.

Ichidan verbs always have i sound (or e sound) in front of conjugation endings.
