On this page, you can learn how to ask what somebody’s hobby is in Japanese.
Key Sentence
First box: English, Second box: Romaji, Last box: Japanese writing and audio
What is your hobby? |
shu mi wa na n de su ka |
しゅみは何ですか。 |
One by one
- しゅみ → hobby
- は → no meaning
- 何(なん) → what
- です → is
- か → ?
Note 1
‘your’ is あなたの, so ‘your hobby’ is あなたのしゅみ.
However, you hardly use あなたの in a daily conversation. That is why ‘your hobby’ is just しゅみ.
Note 2
You can ask other things with the sentence pattern:
What is your name? |
o na ma e wa na n de su ka |
お名前は何ですか。 |
お名前(お・な・まえ) → name
What is your job? |
shi go to wa na n de su ka |
仕事は何ですか。 |
仕事(し・ごと) → job
