Introduction
‘can’ is ことができます in Japanese.
However, there is another way to describe ‘can’.
That is called Potential Form.
Potential Form
‘to go’ is いきます.
There are two ways to say ‘can go’ in Japanese.
- いくことができます
- いけます（Potential Form）
How to make Potential Form (Polite Form)
Click here if you don’t know about Japanese verb groups: Irregular Verb, Ichidan Verb (Group 2) and Godan Verb (Group 1)
Irregular verb
- します → できます (can do)
- 来ます → 来れます (can come)
Be careful of the kanji pronunciation.
Ichidan Verb or Group 2
Cut off ます then add られます.
(Ex) たべます → たべられます
Godan Verb or Group 1
Change the letter in front of ます to ‘e’ sound.
(Ex) いきます → いけます
Potential Form (Plain Form)
To make Potential Form in Plain Form, change ます to る.
- できます → できる (can do)
- これます → これる (can come)
- たべられます → たべられる (can eat)
- いけます → いける (can go)
Note: を to が
を is often replaced with が in front of Potential Form.
母はピアノをひけます。
My mother can play piano.
↓
母はピアノがひけます。
My mother can play piano.
The first one (with を) is understandable but does not sound right.

- あるいて学校にいけます。
- へやからはなびがみられます。
- I can sleep at 6 today.
- My mother can play the piano.
- You can enjoy fishing at the river.
- I can walk to school.
- You can see fireworks from the room.

Task: Change into English.
- 父はとてもはやくはしれます。
- くうこうで車がかりられます。
- 日本語と英語がはなせます。
- あしたのパーティにこれますか。
- 私はすしがつくれます。
- My father can run very fast.
- You can rent a car at the airport.
- I can speak Japanese and English.
- Can you come to a party tomorrow?
