Sentence Pattern
Let’s learn how to report speech in Japanese.
Somebody says that + sentence
↓
Somebody は sentence と いいます
と in front of いいます does not mean anything but you must have it in this case.
Plain Form
The sentence in front of と言います must finish with Plain Form.
My father says that America is a dangerous country.
父は アメリカはあぶない国（くに）だ と言います。
My mother says that cooking is easy.
母は りょうりはかんたんだ と言います。
Use が
Use が as a topic marker for a topic of the sentence after ‘that’ if it has a verb.
My mother says that I broke the chair.
母は 私がいすをこわした と言います。
‘broke’（こわした）is the verb in the sentence.
Use は
Use は as a topic marker for a topic of the sentence after ‘that’ if it doesn’t have a verb.
My mother says that planes are convenient.
母は ひこうきはべんりだ と言います。

- My father says that jobs are easy.
- My younger sister says that Indians are kind.
- My older sister says that ramen are yummy.
